Pizza Jerk - Visit #1

Tonight I began my mission to find the best pizza in Portland. This goal will take me to 26 pizza joints through 2017. During each visit I will rank the pies in a number of areas, including dough/crust, sauce, toppings, overall taste, and x-factor. Each category is broken down into sub-categories and weighted based on what I find important in a great pie. Ratings will be based on a 100 point scale, and rankings will be announced at the end of the year.
Cast Iron Cheese
I started tonight at Pizza Jerk in NE Portland. Pizza Jerk is Tommy Habetz's (Bunk Sandwiches) pizza joint. I love Bunk, and I have heard good things so it seemed like a logical place to start. In 2016 Bon Appetit ranked Pizza Jerk a top new restaurant in the nation. Thrillist also ranked Pizza Jerk a top pizza joint in the U.S. in 2016. The bar was set pretty high with these articles, so did it live up to all the hype?
Side view of that airy dough
It was a tail of two styles. We ordered the cheese pie cooked on cast iron, and also a New Haven style half white pie and half Dan Dan. The cheese pie was the first to come out, and I have to say I really liked it. The crust was crunchy on the outside, it had the right amount of char, and the inside of the crust was full of texture. The sauce was fresh, and balanced all the cheese. I typically don't like a pie with so much cheese, but it definitely worked. I will definitely order this one again.
Nice char on the cast iron pie
The second pizza to come out was the New Haven style, half White Pie and half Dan Dan. This pie was slightly disappointing. The crust was thin, which was expected, but lacked flavor and airiness. The sauce was average on both pies. It just didn't get my taste buds firing. Like it was just a bit bland. Between the White Pie and the Dan Dan, I would go with the Dan Dan. It gained points for creativity. The sweet pork and honey went well together. The crunchy kale on top also added a nice dimension. However, next time I go to Pizza Jerk I will stick to the cast iron pizza.
New Haven Style - White Pie and Dan Dan
Overall I was glad to kick things off at Pizza Jerk, and I enjoyed my meal, but I would be really surprised if this winds up being #1 on my list at the end of the year.

Have you been to Pizza Jerk? What do you think?
