Pizzeria Otto - Visit #11

Pizzeria Otto is family friendly, low-key, and located in the Roseway neighborhood (60th/Sandy Blvd). They serve wood fired, Neapolitan style pies. If you haven't been to Naples (I haven't either), this is probably the closest thing in Portland to tasting pizza in its birthplace (Naples, Italy).

Neapolitan pizza is cooked super hot at 900+ degrees in a wood fired oven, and generally takes about 90 seconds to cook. Neapolitan pizza generally consists of more sauce (pureed) than cheese, super fresh and simple ingredients, which combined with the quick bake causes a somewhat soggy texture in the middle of the pie. Traditionally Neapolitan slices are consumed using a knife and fork. This was definitely the style at Pizzeria Otto.

Prosciutto & Arugula
Pizzeria Otto has been receiving high praise lately. They were recently ranked by The Oregonian as the #2 best wood fired pizza in Portland. So what did the Doughboys think? We both thought the ingredients were some of the highest quality and freshest we have tasted this year. We also agreed their sauce (amazing flavor) and ratio of sauce to cheese may have been the best this year.

Margherita Di Bufala

If you love Margherita pies, definitely spring for the Margherita Di Bufala! For just $3 more, they replace the typical cow's milk mozzarella with water buffalo mozza. Water Buffalo mozzarella has a higher moisture content and suits the Neapolitan pizza style much better. It was very good!  Veggie Doughboy and I thought it may be the best Marga we have tried this year.

Wild Mushroom
The pizza was good, and we enjoyed it very much, but it wasn't perfect. We felt the bake was a bit off. I don't think the oven was up to temp. Maybe because we visited in the early evening during the week. Either way, the crust lacked crunch and char that we expected. If you look closely at our pictures you will see what I am talking about. Minimal char and the crust didn't "puff" on the perimeter like we expected.

Prosciutto & Arugula

Pizzeria Otto won't end up nearly as high in our ranking as The Oregonian's, but don't let that stop you from giving it a try. I think we may have caught them on an off night, so we will have to try it again. Check out their $6 Margherita happy hour special after 8:00 PM daily!

Have you tried Pizzeria Otto? What do you think?
